Parque Terra Nostra
A must-see attraction in São Miguel.
A must-visit destination in the heart of São Miguel Island, Parque Terra Nostra, located in the Furnas Valley, dates back to 1775. It was created by American merchant Thomas Hickling, who was captivated by Furnas and sought to establish a haven of perfect rest and tranquility. Today, this enchanting paradise continues to delight all who visit.
In addition to its extensive collection of camellias and other rare species, the Garden surrounding Terra Nostra Garden Hotel is renowned worldwide for its thermal pool. The pool is fed by a volcanic spring with water at a constant 40ºC (104ºF), rich in iron and other minerals highly beneficial for the skin, offering complete and unparalleled relaxation.
Parque Terra Nostra also boasts architectural treasures, such as the enchanting Ginkgo Avenue, inviting visitors to lose themselves in its magic.
Camellia Collection
Parque Terra Nostra
The vast collection of camellias at Parque Terra Nostra is known for its beauty and exclusivity.
The oldest varieties are over 100 years old and were introduced into the Garden by the Marquis of Praia and Monforte around 1872.
From the 1990s onwards, head gardener Fernando Costa invested in this collection, recognizing that camellias adapt exceptionally well to the Azores and Parque Terra Nostra’s climate. He began introducing species from various parts of the world, including North America, the Netherlands, Spain, mainland Portugal, and even the Azores.
Currently, Parque Terra Nostra is home to around 800 specimens of various camellia species and cultivars, carefully distributed across four distinct areas. Thoughtfully integrated into the surrounding landscape, these areas are designed to showcase the entire collection beautifully.
